Change Over Decades
Two decades ago, this Canyon was blighted. It was filled with dumped trash, and completely overrun with non-native weeds.
It also faced destruction.
My mom led the community in saving the canyon, and I was dragged in. It was a lot of work, but if you plant natives they will grow.
Today the canyon is a beautiful example of sustainability in San Diego.
Dedicated to a resilient & sustainable San Diego
The constant tasks of keeping waterways clear, so that flooding does not overwhelm the infrastructure, and playing wack-a-mole with weeds get me into the canyon to get my hands dirty.
Nature is not some nice decoration for the community. Environmental stewardship is about resilience. The city failed to keep a waterway clear downstream of the 32nd Street Canyon, and resulting in severe flooding in the Spring of 2024.
I also serve on the community board for the Greater Golden Hill Community Planning Group, encompassing the 32nd Street Canyon, which weighs in on land use issues in the community.
And finally, sometimes I turn my filmmaking toward local environmental work.
